Here’s why you should use the alumni search tool on LinkedIn

The alumni search functionality on LinkedIn is one of the most useful tools on the site. All you need to do is search for ‘The University of Manchester’ (or any other HE institution!) and click the “Alumni” tab on the header. From there, you can then explore the profiles of almost 300,000 LinkedIn users who attended UoM. Read on for some ideas to help you get the most out of this tool!

Find alumni working in your preferred sector

Two of the first breakdowns that pop up in the alumni tab are “What they do” and “Where they work.” See the vast number of different sectors and companies that people in your position have gone into, and explore areas you might be interested in. It’s a great way to explore the trajectories of specific alumni working in the industry, and maybe even reach out to them for a connection and ask them your questions! LinkedIn allows you to personalise the connection request, so you can explain why you’re interested in talking to them – there’s a good chance they’ll be keen to help! Have a look at this webpage for some extra tips.

Find alumni living in your dream city

LinkedIn also allows you to browse alumni based on where they are currently based. If you’ve got a city or country that you’d love to move to after graduation, why not have a look for someone who’s done that already? If you reach out to them, they might have some useful advice on things to consider when you’re looking to move to a new city, or work abroad.

Find alumni who studied your subject

Possibly the most useful breakdown is “What they studied,” especially if you’re not sure what you want to do yet! This allows you to find alumni who studied your degree and see what they went on to do with it. There are many different paths and possibilities with every degree you can study, so you’re sure to find one you hadn’t considered yet. Reach out to connect with them on LinkedIn and ask them more about how they used the skills and experience they gained in their degree to get into their sector!

So there you have it! Hopefully I’ve been able to give you some ideas that will help you use the LinkedIn alumni search tool to your advantage in your career research, and you’ll be forging new connections with UoM alumni in no time.
