Getting final-year ready: it’s not too late to boost your employability

If you’re preparing to start your final year in September, now’s the time to do some research on your career and boost your employability, before everything gets hectic! Here are some top tips for where to start with your career journey in your final year.

1. Final year careers

We have lots of support and advice to help you get career-focused during your last year at university. Check out our final year careers pages for essential actions to take, useful FAQs, and links to further support and resources.

2. Pathways

The first step in improving your CV, cover letter or interview skills should always be the Careers Service Pathways on CareerConnect. These are short online modules that allow you to go at your own pace to complete activities and build confidence and your skills. We also have Pathways based around psychometric tests and assessment centres, postgraduate study and working in the UK for international students, so it’s likely you’ll find one that suits your situation.

3. Work experience

Work experience is a great way to upskill and try out different sectors before you decide what you want to do. As a student or graduate from The University of Manchester, you have access to the virtual work experience website Forage, where you can take 3-6 hour programmes to get a taste of the sorts of tasks you might be asked to complete in a specific role. If you’d rather get stuck in in person, why not access VolunteerHub via the Careers Service’s volunteering pages?

4. Part-time jobs

Apart from boosting your student loan with some extra income, a part-time job can also give you some really useful transferrable skills and examples of when you’ve proven yourself, to use in your CV and interviews. Have a look at our part-time jobs webpage and these blog posts about managing your time and getting the most out of a part-time job, for some tips, tricks and useful info.

5. Graduate schemes

Many graduate schemes will open in autumn 2023 for an autumn 2024 start, so if you’re interested in getting a place on a scheme and hitting the ground running when you finish, it’s time to start researching now. Check out our graduate scheme FAQ and testimonials from people who secured a place on a graduate scheme to get started. We are also planning a Graduate Schemes Week (16-20 October). More details will be released soon, but make sure to follow us on social media to see the full programme when it’s announced!

Hopefully some of these things can get you started with thinking about your career before the term starts and you’re short on time. Don’t forget that you can book an appointment to have a chat with one of our advisors and talk through your options, if you’re not sure what you want to do, or just need some help finding a path to your dream role. You really don’t have to have any plans beforehand, but if you’d like to explore a little bit or get some help articulating your situation, have a look at our “I don’t know what I want to do” page. Have a great final year!
