Independent Students – Making the most of next academic year!

Independent Students – Making the most of next academic year!

Being estranged from your family or a care leaver can bring additional challenges to university life. Well, the good news is that there is lots of support available at The University of Manchester.

Connect with our Student Support Team and make them aware of your situation. If you are eligible for support, you will have a named contact who can help you navigate all aspects of university life including academic support, pastoral support, accessing services such as health and wellbeing and more.

The Careers Service is also on hand to help you prepare and apply for opportunities, whether that be a part-time job, volunteering, an internship, graduate role, etc. One of our current students, Sarah Zulkernain (Second Year Biomedical Science), shares her advice to students either starting or returning to their course:

I would definitely recommend talking to the careers service at the beginning of the academic year and regularly check their website for any events you might be interested in”.

Events are a great way to get yourself known to employers. One of the first careers events for Independent students takes place on Monday 18th September, between 11am-12pm in The Atrium, University Place. There are also multiple Careers Fairs taking place that Independent students can attend including the STEM Careers Fair on 11th and 12th October, The Autumn Careers Fair on 24th and 25th October, and The Law Fair on 21st November.

When you attend events and meet employers or alumni, connect with them via LinkedIn. The Careers Service has some great advice on setting up a LinkedIn profile and building your network, so get started and use these resources early in the academic year!

Work experience is invaluable to both yourself and future employers, from a personal and professional perspective as an Independent Student. For unpaid opportunities, students may be eligible for financial support through the Careers Service Work Experience Bursary.

So, if you are an Independent student, take advantage of all the support available to you at The University of Manchester. Drop in to see us at The Atrium (First Floor, University Place) or book a one-to-one via CareerConnect. Penney Gordon-Lanes and Ushma Khadia are two Careers Consultants that Independent students can reach out to for support.
